Who doesn't love this song? Even if you don't like it, it is still an iconic piece of music and we all have heard it many times throughout our lives. I'm pretty sure that my dad got The Johnny Cash album, with this song, when it came out in the early 60's. My dad wasn't a big country fan, but he did like good songs and so he would play this album and walk around the house in his underwear and sing this song. It went well with the Mozart arias and symphonies that he would whistle along to. Perfect musical training.

Borgy PhotoI started playing the song about 25 years ago and when I saw the band Blondie play it on a video from a big festival, I was knocked out. I thought that was pretty cool and ballsy to rock out this classic song. They really made it their own. I wasn't a Blondie fan, but I thought they were cool for doing it the way they did and they wore cowboy hats too.

So, a few years ago, I decided to record it. I wanted to make it my own way and not imitate King Johnny or Blondie. I asked my friend Bill Svarda over and asked if he would play a piano track and as part of the track play the lines that the trumpet had played on the original. He made it sound wonderful. We cut piano, drums, bass, vocal and acoustic guitar right away. I added an electric guitar and I then let it sit for a long time. It didn't feel quite right.

I called Jeff Borgeson and asked him to play a few electric guitar tracks and he nailed it. He tuned the guitar down low and got a great sound and also played a few lead guitar tracks. It glued the whole thing together. I then brought it to Pierre Grill and he replaced the drum machine with live drum tracks. It was really swinging now.

I had always wanted to hear this song as a duet (with me and...) so I called Ginai and asked her if she would give it a whirl. She came in and we had a blast. We did it a few times and I asked her to try it a few different ways straight up, country, jazzy, soulful. Since my voice is limited to my sound.. her track couldn't be too far out there. I think we got the right combo and added a few scats and harmonies. It worked. Ginai can sing anything and make it sound good. She also makes me sound good and I love singing with her. I have also told her many times and I'll now tell you that her confidence in my singing has been a huge boost to me. I cannot thank her enough.
