Inciting Incident Presented by Scott Driscoll Mercer A & B Stories start with an inciting incident, an event that disturbs the balance in a character's familiar world. The action that follows is neither random nor solely dependent on external forces. Every event that follows that disturbance is directed by the character's conscious desire to quest toward a goal that will if successfully achieved, resolve the trouble caused by the initial disturbance. Those who attend this presentation will learn: what an inciting incident is, how it can be used to spark a quest, and how the on-going need to resolve the disturbance caused by the inciting incident can provide causal connections between event, and keep the reader excited enough to continue turning pages and wondering what is next.
