Steve Baron, M.A., MFT

Mr Baron is the retired director of Family Court Services in Santa Clara County, California, former adjunct faculty for the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges on the subject of juvenile dependency mediation, trainer for the California Administrative Office of the Courts on various subjects including domestic violence and ethics, and current adjunct faculty for Santa Clara University in the graduate division on the subjects of child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, and substance abuse. He has authored or co-authored articles for Family Court Review, Californias Journal of the Center for Families, Children & the Courts, and the NCJFCJ Juvenile and Family Court Journal.

Jerilyn L. Borack

Judge Borack was appointed to the Superior Court by Governor Davis in June, 2002. Prior to her appointment she was in private practice for nineteen years specializing in family law and was a Certified Specialist. She had served as Judge Pro-tem, court appointed attorney for minor children, and court appointed referee/Special Master in the Superior Courts of Sacramento, Placer and Yolo Counties. She was an active member of the Sacramento County Bar Family Law Section, serving on their Executive Committee from 1991 to 1995. During her tenure on the bench she has been active in statewide, court, and community activities. She was appointed by the Chief Justice to the Statewide Elkins Task Force, and is currently a member of the Implementation Task Force. She was a member of the Domestic Violence Practices and Procedures Task Force and currently serves on the Domestic Violence Implementation Task Force. She co-chairs her courts Standing Committee on Domestic Violence, and is an active member of the Court Community Focus Committee. She has served as Supervising Judge of the Family Law and Probate Departments of the Sacramento Superior Court and has served on the courts Executive Committee. She is the current co-chair, since 2005, of the Judicial Counsel Advisory Committee on Family and Juvenile Law, having served on the committee since 2003. She is active as well in California Judicial Education and Research (CJER), having chaired the Family Law Education Committee as well as serving as faculty at several educational institutes and programs. Judge Borack remains an active member of the Milton F. Schwartz Chapter of the American Inns of Court (since 1997), and has served as President of the Board of Directors of the California Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. She has been a member, and chair, of the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Youth Symphony, and has served on the Board of Directors of Sierra Adoption Agency.

Janet R. Johnston Ph.D.

Dr. Johnston is a professor in the Department of Justice Studies, San Jose State University. For almost three decades, she has specialized in counseling, mediation and research with high- conflict, litigating divorcing couples and their children with special attention to domestic violence, child abduction and alienated children. A frequent featured speaker nationally and internationally, she has published more than 60 papers, co-authored two books (Impasses of Divorce and In the Name of the Child), two treatment manuals (High Conflict, Violent and Separating Families and A Safe Place to Grow) and a book of therapeutic stories for children (Through the Eyes of Children. Jan Johnston has also been the recipient of honors from the Association of Family & Conciliation Courts (2007; 2000; 1996; & 1993), from the Academy of Family Mediators (2000) and from San Jose State University (2007)

Nancy Williams Olesen, Ph.D.

Dr. Olesen graduated in psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and earned her Ph.D. degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has worked in private practice for almost thirty years, with a particular emphasis on child abuse and neglect, custody and access disputes and the interface between clinical and forensic psychology. She has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in clinical psychology and numerous professional workshops for professionals, both nationally and internationally. Dr. Olesen has been involved in research regarding psychological testing in custody evaluations and regarding families undergoing custody evaluation. She has co-written articles and taught professional workshops about the analysis of child alienation and family abuse.

Julie Saffren, JD

Julie Saffren, JD is a solo practitioner in Family Law with a focus on domestic violence and custody issues. She was formerly staff attorney at Support Network for Battered Women in Mountain View, CA. She is one of the co-creators of DVLSR (Domestic Violence Limited Scope Representation), a grant- funded collaborative with the Pro Bono Project of Silicon Valley. She is a lecturer at Santa Clara University School of Law. She is a member and former chair of the San Jose Regional Standing Subcommittee for the Family Law Executive Committee of the State Bar, reviewing legislation for its impact on victims, families and pro pers. In May 2007, she was appointed to Santa Clara Countys Domestic Violence Council. In June 2007, she was awarded Barrister of the Year by the Santa Clara County Bar Association.
