I loved this song the first time I heard back in the 60's, done by The Kinks. I think we were very lucky to have all these great rockers who grew up with all the good old time music. Ray Davies has a wonderful vaudeville twist in his music. My mom used to play old timey 30's music and would play stuff like this all the time.

I have been playing this song in groups and at parties and events for as long as I can remember and everybody loves it. I have always wanted to record it and jazz it up with a Dixieland horn type of sound - so when I started this CD - I called a few of the guys who I knew would get what I wanted to do.

I started by playing the acoustic guitar with a drum track, then quickly added the bass. I then brought it over to my pal, Harry Donahue. We have played this song many times at his house parties and his piano parts are always right out of old time jazz sounds. ...and perfect. He played a few takes and nailed it.

I then called Bill Svarda and he brought his friends Rusty and Gary over and the 3 of them played the horn parts - like a bunch of New Orleans pros. They cut loose and I was in heaven. We also recorded STEPPIN OUT that day.

I wanted background vocals and called the great Bill Champlin. I knew he would make it work with the style I was trying to get across. He came in, cut 6 tracks of vocals and we mixed it into the track. Bingo ! Then, he said, how about organ - and he played the great lines at the end of the chorus and in the tag. It sounded like a Beatles lick to me - and he turned on the big old time movie organ sound for the final chorus's. I was blown away.

I brought all this back to Pierre Grill, in Hawaii, and he added live drums that really made it sound like a wild band. This kept getting better and better. Much better than anything I could have imagined. (this is one of the great thrills of recording - when you bring in great people, they take the music to whole new levels that you can't even think of.) We mixed it a few times and finally got it the way we wanted it.

Now, I played it for my mom and she was blown away. She really loved this song and would always ask me and my sister, Noela, to sing it at parties. I had played her earlier versions, but this was with all the parts and she really loved the horns.

She passed away a short time later and we had a lovely memorial for her and I asked the Hot Club of Hulaville, Pierre Grill and Benoit Weber to come and play. We opened with this song and my sister and I sang it. It was a fitting memorial for the great woman.
