Judge Leonard Edwards (ret.)

Judge Leonard Edwards (ret.) is a Judge-in-Residence with the California Administrative Office of the Courts. In that capacity he provides technical assistance to the courts of California, particularly in areas involving children and families. Judge Edwards served for 26 years as a Superior Court Judge in Santa Clara County, California. He sat as a domestic relations judge and as a juvenile court judge.

During his judicial career, Judge Edwards founded and was the first president of the Juvenile Court Judges of California, was co-founder of the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council, was co-founder of Kids In Common, and founder of the Child Advocates of Santa Clara County. Judge Edwards was the President of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges in 2002-2003. Judge Edwards has taught at the University of Santa Clara Law School, Stanford Law School, and the California Judicial College. He has provided judicial trainings in over 47 states and 9 foreign countries. Judge Edwards has written widely including a book entitled Child Abuse and the Legal System. Judge Edwards has received many awards. He was the recipient of the 2004 William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence.

George Ferrick, MA, MFT

Mr. Ferrick is a supervising court services analyst with the AOC Center for Families, Children & the Courts. His area of focus is family dispute resolution services, encompassing training, policy, and legislation relating to family court services, child custody mediation, juvenile dependency mediation, child custody evaluation, and related services. He has more than 22 years experience in working in the superior courts, having held administrative positions as manager of family court services at the Superior Court of San Mateo County and as coordinator of the intern program and coordinator of district family court services at the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. As a senior family mediator for 20 years, he conducted approximately 8,000 child custody mediations. His written contributions include Refuseniks of Divorce, about children reluctant to spend time with their non-custodial parent, and Three Crucial Questions, about mandatory mediation. His workshop presentations have addressed the topics of common mediation problems, advanced mediation skills, transformative mediation in the court setting, and report writing. Mr. Ferrick completed graduate studies in marriage and family at the California Family Study Center (now the Phillips Graduate Institute) in Southern California and is licensed as a marriage and family therapist.

Susan Hanks. PhD, LCSW

Susan Hanks. PhD, LCSW, has most recently served as Bureau Chief of the Superior Court of Alameda Countys Families & Childrens Services Bureau. In this leadership capacity she has been responsible for program development, management and evaluation of the child custody and juvenile dependency mediation programs. Prior to her position with the Alameda Court, Susan was with the California Judicial Councils Administrative Office of the Courts, from 1997 to 2002. In this role she worked closely with Family Court Services directors and mediation programs statewide. Her responsibilities included the development of statewide institutes and training programs for child custody mediators. Another prominent area of Susans professional focus has been family / domestic violence issues, and she participated in the 2007 AFCCs Wingspread Conference on Domestic Violence and Family Courts. Susan has served as faculty and presenter in numerous venues, both professional (AFCC and other) and court related. Among her honors, Susan has been recognized locally by the Mental Health Association of Alameda County, Annual Achievement Award; and nationally as a recipient of a fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health.
