Traditional approaches to the treatment of major depressive disorder emphasize genetic and biochemical etiologies. An individual's experience is richer than that, however, involving personal, spiritual, nutritional and social constructs. The presenter will outline historical approaches to understanding major depressive disorder, explaining their deficiencies and their contributions to the relatively modest improvements demonstrated by the modern medical model. The presenter and two people who have lived with depression will then explore the benefits of a postmodern model that accounts for multi-factorial etiologic and treatment approaches. - W. Clay Jackson, M.D., assistant professor of Clinical Psychiatry, University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Arlington, Tenn.
